Rilo Kiley |
Ogden Theatre |
Jenny Lewis (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Blake Sennett (guitar, vocals), Pierre de Reeder (bass), and Dave Rock (drums, later replaced by ex-Lassie Foundation member Jason Boesel) formed Rilo Kiley in 1998 in Los Angeles. Three years after its formation, the band released Take Offs and Landings on the Barsuk label. The supporting tour found the band opening for the Breeders, Pedro the Lion, and Superchunk. Rilo Kiley's follow-up, The Execution of All Things appeared on Saddle Creek in fall 2002. The quartet earned major-label distribution (through Warner) for their third album, 2004's More Adventurous.

Thrice |
Ogden Theatre |
The California-based quartet, who've also been busy of late making high-profile main stage appearances at the Coachella, Reading & Leeds and Bamboozle festivals, have followed the New Pantheon Award-nominated Vheissu's radical metamorphosis with The Alchemy Index, a four-volume collection spread between two releases comprised of four EPs, each devoted to one of the classical elements in nature-fire, water, earth and air-with each EP sonically and thematically tailored to evoke the atmosphere inherent in its corresponding element. This fall marks the release of the first two volumes of the series-Fire & Water-while Earth & Air are scheduled for a spring debut. For Thrice, it's the realization of a year-long process of writing and recording, which was done primarily in the band's own studio and engineered by guitarist Teppei Teranishi, without the assistance of an outside producer. |

Mason Jennings |

"I am interested in the experience of life, not it's meaning," Mason Jennings says.
This purposeful embrace informs Mason's music, and the songs on his new album, Boneclouds (Glacial Pace/Epic), are richly worded reflections that address the hidden struggles and neglected dreams that have come to infuse most of modern-day life. Mason's songs provide unique insights that offer hope, honesty and, above all, faith - an undeniable faith in life. |

Nightwish |
Ogden Theatre |
Following in the footsteps of the Gathering and Lacuna Coil (goth-influenced "symphonic" metal bands with female vocalists), Nightwish was formed in Kitee, Finland, in 1997 by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. Initially attempting to create acoustic music, he recruited trained opera vocalist Tarja Turunen, but soon added full metal-band instrumentation in the persons of guitarist Emppo Vuorinen, bassist Sami Vanska, and drummer Jukka Nevalainen. The band's demos landed them a contract with the Finnish label Spinefarm, which released their debut album Angels Fall First in late 1997 (it appeared in the rest of Europe the following year). The follow-up, Oceanborn, appeared in late 1998 and made Nightwish a bonafide mainstream success in their homeland; the album reached the Finnish Top Five and spun off three Top Ten singles. The band toured Europe heavily, consolidating their success, and in 2000 recorded their third album Wishmaster. Not only did it top the Finnish charts, but it also became the group's first album to be released in the U.S. (by Century Media, which reissued their previous albums in 2001 as well).

The Dresden Dolls |
Ogden Theatre |
Rock bands are pigeonholed into ever-increasingly minuscule sub-categorizations, but The Dresden Dolls continue to defy explanation and classification. While some have called it theatrical rock, punk cabaret, manic-musical, neo-glam-torch…eventually even the most clever and creative describers shrug and say: "You just have to hear it to believe it." |

Untitled #15 (La-La Land) |
Denver Art Museum |
Put an end to the work week at Untitled #15 (La-La Land), May 30, from 6 to 10 p.m. when the Denver Art Museum (DAM) encourages guests to fulfill their fantasies. Forget the daily drudgery with artmaking, imagination tours and creative escapes.
Indulge a passion for fashion when FM Magazine brings designer Olivia Plyler and her fantasy-inspired frocks to the DAM. Plyler’s fashion-forward “pawns” strut down a runway before performing a live action game of chess. All outfits are a nod toward the Opera House Massacre, a famous 1858 chess game between American chess master Paul Morphy, German Duke Karl of Brunswick and French Count Isouard. Brunswick and Isouard consulted together on a team, trying to outwit Morphy. But Morphy made brilliant sacrifices to win the game becoming one of the first modern chess masters of his time. Live string music brings the game to life as the models move to the beat, introducing the game and the fantastical pieces.
